Presentation at IUSSP Conference

On 8th December 2021, Arun Balachandran (University of Maryland, College Park, USA) presented the paper co-authored with Prof. Ajay Bailey (EQUIMOB) at the 29th International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) International Population Conference. The paper titled Role of Transport in employment among vulnerable groups: Intersectional evidence from Indian cities was developed as part of the EQUIMOB project. The IUSSP International Population Conference is the world’s largest international scientific conference on population and demography and happens once every four years. The conference brings together researchers, policymakers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and from across the globe, to present and discuss the latest research on a broad range of contemporary population issues. The current edition of the Conference was held online and was organized by the IUSSP Council, partnering with the UNFPA, UN Population Division and the Indian Association for the Study of Population.

The paper by Arun and Ajay was presented in the session ‘The Determinants of Urban Inequality’, chaired by Prof. Mathias Lerch (Urban Demography Laboratory, Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, EPFL). The session explored the key factors leading to unequal standards of living in urban cities, with a focus on developing countries. Using an intersectional approach, their paper showed the nexus between access to transport and the employment of vulnerable groups in Indian cities, with household-level quantitative data.
