Bart van Gils wins award for his thesis

Bart van Gils, one of the former graduate students that conducted his MSc thesis under the EQUIMOB program, has won the 2nd place in the competition for the prestigious Marc de Schmidt Thesis Award. This thesis discusses the potential applicability of the smart city in Bengaluru’s peripheries. In particular, with a focus on how smart cities can improve the inclusion of marginalised groups regarding their access to basic infrastructure. Furthermore, Bart also won the public choice’ award in the same competition. The EQUIMOB team wants to congratulate him for these achievements.

The Marc the Schmidt Thesis award is provided by the STOGO Foundation, which aims to promote applied geographical research and the careers of young geographers, and is a competition for post-graduate students that completed their thesis at the human geography department of Utrecht University. The jury rewarded Bart van Gils the second price as it was ‘pleased with the relevant research topic, the high practical use of the thesis results, and was impressed by the methodological framework in situ’.
